Meet the Healthy Eating Index

The same measure nutrition researchers use to grade a diet - now on every meal you log

HEI score comparison. Average American: 58, needs improvement, diet high in refined carbs and sodium. WholePlate user: 81, excellent, diet high in veggies and whole grains. Scale below runs 0 (needs improvement) to 60 (good) to 80 (excellent) to 100.

What it measures

13 food groups and nutrients - fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, dairy, healthy oils, plus limits on added sugars, sodium, and saturated fat.

In WholePlate

Every meal you log gets an HEI score in real time. You see how balanced your day is right away - not weeks later at a doctor's visit.

Stay full, without the guesswork

Here's what research shows about how different foods affect satiety

A balanced plate keeps you full for 3–4 hours. Fiber slows digestion, so you stay satisfied instead of reaching for a snack an hour later.

Eat a variety

WholePlate plate breakdown showing fruits, grains, vegetables, protein, oils, and dairy with detailed subcategories

We'll help you eat from all the food groups - vegetables, fruits, grains, protein, and dairy. Plus, you'll even be able to see how much variety you're eating within each group.

Here's what variety gives you:

Better nutrient coverage

Better nutrient coverage

Different foods provide different vitamins and minerals - together they help fill nutrient gaps and support your overall health.

A healthy gut

A healthy gut

Your gut loves variety - different foods feed different bacteria, helping digestion, mood, and weight balance.

More flavor and enjoyment

More flavor and enjoyment

Try cutting or cooking veggies in new ways - variety keeps meals exciting and helps curb junk-food cravings.

Save a little space for dessert - every day

Extras this meal: 168 of 336 calories. Added sugars 18 of 45 grams, saturated fat 10 of 18 grams.

Leave about 20% of your daily intake for fun foods.

That's totally okay: sweets, fast food, high-fat snacks - it all fits here.

You can't build healthy habits if you're always saying no to “bad” foods. Sooner or later, cravings win - and suddenly the whole box of chocolates is gone. Let's skip that drama. Allow yourself dessert and drop the guilt - it's food, just like everything else. A little treat every day won't hurt.
